In our days it is modernised and allocates even group of rented rooms. Many residents have immigrate in America and come here every summertime. igger and most important than the Diapontia islands is with exceptional natural environment and ruins of Venetian castles, traditional houses and old churches. Mainer settlement of island is the Village and the harbour is the settlement Sand. From here everyone can go to the beach with the green waters and the cave.According to the Greek mythology, Kalipso kept here captive the Odysseus. The smallest of the Diapontian Islands, Mathraki is located 4 nautical miles from the Cape of Arillas and is 3 square kilometres in size. Its coastline forms bays, of which the two largest, Ammos and Apidies, are used as harbours by the small boats operating the route between Corfu and Mathraki. It boasts beaches of fine sand and is encircled by reefs, shoals and rocks which attract all the fishing boats of the region. At the two extremities of the island stand the twin villages of Ano and Kato Mathraki. You will also find two hotels with fine views and several picturesque little tavernas. Beautiful Mathraki is the Northern most and smallest of the Diapontia islands.  With a length of 4klm from NW to SE and with a width of 1klm from W to E it is actually a long and narrow island.  It's surface just exceeds 3 square klm while its highest point is Merovigli which reaches 160m in height. The small harbor in Mathraki is a haven and not affected by any weather conditions.  The two sides of the port protect it from North and East while the rest is protected by the bulk of the island. Choosing a root with a Southern direction the uphill concrete road passes through a magnificent undergrowth.  Many wonderful footpaths - earthen or paved - are found along the way leading in various directions.  Mathraki has a lot of beauties inland, well-hidden among the olive and pine trees.  Also outstanding is Mathraki at it's West shores.  Here we can stand out the great curve of bay Fiki that lies with peaceful majesty among an environment with sweet-scented plants.  A mile across rises from the sea the Trahia island which looks like a war ship. The good concrete road passes through Horio, Ano Panta according to local naming and reaches Bay Apidies where you can still see the remnants of an old harbor's installations.  You complete our small tour on the North part of the island, at Giorga area, called Kato Panta from natives.  It's a nice scenery with the usual rich flora and some old and new houses scattered among the olive trees.  After the end of the concrete road a footpath lead us to the northern side of the island where cape Sakki is located. A great uniqueness and an important tourist attraction for the island is the boundless beach of Portelo that occupies the largest part of Northeastern side of the island.  With its marvelous beach that reaches almost an expansion of 3 km and its shallow crystal waters that slowly deepen, Portelo beach is accessible and friendly even to the ones that don't know swimming. Mathraki with its lovely natural beauty and its hospitable native inhabitants can offer the ideal vacations to the lovers of loneliness and peace surrounded by a magnificent serene environment.
